More with less - A circular economy by breeding Black Soldier Fly Larvae

Black Soldier Fly Larvae convert waste into protein rich feed and food, with less water, land, ocean fish and less CO2 emissions. In the end even manure could be used to feed the larvae. The pre-pupae are rich in protein, oil and chitin and, as such, offer an excellent alternative to currently used soy and fish meal. Fish and chicken originally have insects in their diet anyway. So, bringing them back into their ecosystem would not only save the planet from being exploited, but also contribute to the animals’ health, lower cholesterol, and higher quality of meat and eggs.

Describe the problem your company wishes to solve and how your product or service will solve it

We want to solve the problem of CO2 emissions, resource consumption and environmental degradation as a result of raising animals for human consumption. With an expected population of 9 billion people in 2050 there are more mouths to feed than ever. Cattle grazing, soy production and overfishing the oceans has grown abundantly and will increase at an alarming degree if business as usual is continued.

All animals raised for human consumption together are responsible for 30% of global water consumption, occupy up to 45% of the earth’s land, cause 91% of amazon destruction, and are a leading cause of ocean dead zones, habitat destruction and species extinction. Smarter production methods, including improved animal diets are urgently needed. If we don’t wake up and do something about the oceans being overfished, scientists predict we will have fishless oceans by 2048. People don’t want to hear they have to change, governments and environmental organisations don’t want to tell. But it is crystal clear something has to change drastically.

We propose the Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) as a sustainable and alternative source of protein to soy beans and fish meal, and eventually as an substitute to meat.

Describe other business assistance that you are seeking from Nutreco

We would like to have your opinion on our product quality. If we supply our larvae to Nutreco, what amount and quality is expected then? Also, we would like to strengthen our network with professionals from the insect breeding sector. And we are still looking for investors and subsidies. We are keen on upscaling as soon as possible, but the right input to do so. To take a next step, not only we and our core business, but also our network, investors, suppliers and clients should be ready. Nutreco could assist us in taking the next step.

Are you available to participate in the final event in the Netherlands 28, 29, and 30 May? All expenses will be covered by Nutreco

Yes

Describe how the prize - a validation trial in our facilities - could boost the development of your business

We gained a lot of knowledge in breeding the insects, but are still looking for the right balance in what to feed the larvae. Coffee waste is not at hand in the Netherlands. Waste from supermarkets is not useful, as we cannot be sure supermarket waste is 100% meat-free. Also, we should be alert on using organic waste that does not contain any form of pesticides as that will kill our core product. Furthermore we want to make a first step towards automation and need help in where to start.

Hello and good luck, as you may be aware the insect growing production does have co2 emmitions from the larvae and feed, we are using serial incubators to grow insects and IOT and sensors make it possible to get readings for the CO2 emmitions during the growing cycle and record it on log, finding out which feed is the less pollution to the environment. Would you be interested in cooperation allowing your company and subcontractors to grow insects in a precision production with monitoring and evaluation of final products, by using IOT incubators specialty design for your size and needs.
