Effects of grain processing on Ketosis control and immune system function of dairy cows

Negative energy balance (NEB) in dairy cows induces lipolysis and lipid mobilization. Evaluating the concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) is indicative of lipid mobilization and fatty acid oxidation (Wathes et al., 2009). NEFA reflects the mobilization importance of fat from storage and BHBA indicates the completeness of oxidization of fat in the liver (De Koster and Opsomer, 2013). Decreased plasma glucose and insulin levels have been associated with negative energy balance (Butler et al., 2003; Lucy at al., 1991a) and elevate as cows progress towards a more positive energy balance (Jorritsma, 2003). In conclusion, energy intake must not be compromised during the days around calving. Any factor restricting feed intake around calving (such as milk fever or retained placenta) increases fat accumulation in the liver, affecting the energy deficit of cow and increasing the risk of fatty liver-ketosis. During this project, it is suggested to investigate the concentrations of blood glucose, insulin, BHBA, NEFA, cholesterol, triglyceride, and acute phase proteins (APPs) like haptoglobin (Hp) and serum amyloid A (SAA) or analysis the related enzymes such as lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase, cholesteryl ester transfer protein, alpha-1 antitrypsin, γ- glutamyl transferase, aspartate transaminase, glutamate dehydrogenase, dipeptidyl peptidase-4, etc.

Little is known about the effects of grain processing on Ketosis control in dairy cows, especially with concurrent use of feed additives like rumen - protected Choline / Niacin. Literature review showed the shortage of data about the relationships between ketosis and immune system function. The possible use of APPs in cattle has been investigated in various inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions, as well as in experi­mental infections and natural diseases which pro­vide data for veterinarians and farmers regarding the possible use of APPs as biomarkers of diseases in the field (Ceciliani et al. 2012). Applications of APPs in bovine medicine have largely focused on diseases with economic impor­tance. It has reported that daily milk loss was greatest within the 2 weeks after the diagnosis of ketosis in dairy cows, varying from 3.0 to 5.3 kg/d, depending on parity. Cows in parity 4 or higher were most severely affected by ketosis; the average total loss per cow was 353.4 kg. So, economically ketosis is an important metabolic disorder. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the effects of grain processing and rumen-protected choline / Niacin on ketosis control and immune system function of dairy cows.

Risk factors for metabolic diseases of dairy cows such as milk fever and ketosis include stage of lactation, parity, milk production, and nutritional management (Radostits et al., 2007; Smith, 2008; LeBlanc, 2010). The effects of management system were mediated through risk factors such as amount of concentrate fed for ketosis rate and use of grazing for ketosis rate (Richert at al., 2013). The objective of animal health is important among other things due to the increasing focus of consumers, politicians and farmers on the welfare of animals. As non-specific markers of inflammation, acute phase proteins (APPs) testing is a tool for studying pathogenesis, the spread of infectious diseases or the efficacy of pharmaceuticals and vaccines. The measurement of APPs might also prove useful in defining the objective health status of an animal or a herd. The present definition of health as the freedom of certain specified disease agents does not guarantee healthy animals. In addition to the welfare aspect, the farmer would benefit when subclinical inflammatory infections are revealed and curative treatments performed. Finally, I like to do something for animal welfare and then for science and human.
