Hargol FoodTech - World's First commercial Grasshopper Farm!

Hargol FoodTech is world's first commercial grasshopper farmer. The company is using technology to grow large quantities of grasshoppers in captivity. Company's optimized methods and technology enable growing several species of grasshoppers quickly and under sanitary conditions for a reliable, sustainable, and quality protein source. Hargol's line of products will include grasshopper protein powder, food additives and pet food.

The Hargol FoodTech difference includes:

Year-round production – as opposed to limited seasons in the wild – for an ongoing, large supply to meet growing demand

Superior nutrient content – Up to 70% protein, all essential amino acids, lipids, Iron, zinc, chitin

Innovative cage structure for vertical farming enables growing X10 more biomass per m², improved sanitarian conditions

Optimized feeding – reduces growing costs, improves nutrient content

Zero waste – all materials converted into products

Efficient growth & production methods – saves resources, creates high margins

Neutral in taste and flavor & minimal processing – high quality ingredient

Describe the problem your company wishes to solve and how your product or service will solve it

Existing feed sources are un-sustainable and not as healthy as we would like them to be.

The need for alternative, high quality, healthier and more sustainable protein sources is sky rocketing.

Preliminary research done in the world showed that a diet based on grasshoppers protein may have positive impact on the development of embryos and children.

High in protein, omega-3, Iron, Zinc and Folic Acid, grasshoppers are an amazing nutritional source.

They also contain Chitin that is know as natural antibiotics.

We're looking to further research the usage of grasshoppers protein in animals feed and its impact on their development and health.

Describe other business assistance that you are seeking from Nutreco

We would like to develop the concept of adding grasshopper protein to animals feed and prove the viability of this business opportunity.

For the long term we will be looking for business partners to establish industrial scale grasshopper farms across the globes.

Are you available to participate in the final event in the Netherlands 28, 29, and 30 May? All expenses will be covered by Nutreco

Yes

Describe how the prize - a validation trial in our facilities - could boost the development of your business

The prize will boost a new line of business for Hargol opening a huge opportunity and accelerating our expansion.

Hi Dror, thanks for your contribution!

Could you tell us something about the feed source you are using/planing to use in the future? Where do you source this from?

Also, can you explain a little more on your statement ' Zero waste – all materials converted into products' . Do grasshoppers not produce any waste products? Or do you produce alternative products from the waste?

Regards,

Chris

Hi Chris,
Thank you for your questions!
I'll start with feed - We feed our grasshoppers with grass. The leading feed source now is corn feed that subcontractors grow for us - year round, organic, etc.
Zero waste means we use all the materials produced: The entire grasshopper is processed into powder and the feces of the grasshoppers are used as fertilizer.
Let me know if you have additional questions.
Best regards,
Dror

Hi Dror,

Interesting project!
The prize of Nutreco feed tech challenge is 'a validation trial in one of Nutreco research facilities'. As your business is focussed on human food, I am wondering if you win the challenge how you are going to use the prize. Which animal species is of interest for you to test your grasshopper meal product?
As majority of insect producers are focusing on black solider fly and meal worm, what is the specific reason Hargol opted for grasshoppers?
What is the maximum achievable production biomass of grasshopper per cubic meter?
Can you scale-up the production of grasshopper meal to the same level as BSF larvae meal production?

Best regards,
Saravanan

Hi Saravanan,

Thank you for the feedback.
As many insect producers are focused on BSF and mealworms as you mentioned based on their ability to be fed on a variety of organic waste along with their efficient biomass development, grasshoppers provide an interesting alternative that is superior in nutritional content of up to 70%, high in lipids, iron, zinc and folic acid and much lower far content. This means they require no processing.
Production per cubic meter can reach 12kg per growing cycle.
And it would be interesting for us to test the grasshoppers as one of two options:
1. Pet food as they are they are the healthiest alternative and are actually the natural food those animals would eat in the wild.
2. As an alternative antibiotics in animals feed (mainly due to their Chitin content).
The technology and methods we developed enable us to scale up production and additional grasshopper farms will be established over the coming months to meet the demand we have from the market for our unique product.

Best regards,
Dror
