Entobel insect based products as immuno stimulant and palatable ingredient in shrimp/aqua diets

Entobel - www.entobel.com - is active in the field of insect production in Vietnam since 2013.

Species : Hermetia illucens

Entobel works closely with actors from the shrimp industry in Vietnam and trials have been performed showing the great immune response of young shrimps - higher survival on white spot disease challenge test - without affecting growth performance even at very high inclusion rates.

Entobel has also proven high palatability of its insectmeal with shrimps and other aqua species with positive behavioral response and higher feed intake.

Entobel complies with EU regulation rules regarding substrate fed to the insects, has proven commercial and technical feasibility, and scales up its activities end of this year in Vietnam with a capacity going from currently 60 Tons a year to 1000 Tons a year insectmeal.

Thank you for your submission, Gaetan. Can you please further elaborate on the benefits of your products compared to similar products from your competitors?

Dear Hester,

Thank you for your interest.

I will infer you are thinking about DIRECT competition.

Here are some highlights concerning the H-Meal Product :

1. Only plant based products used as substrate to feed the insects
2. Harvesting at young age of the larvae - well before pre-pupae stage which leads to less non digestible proteins/N in the final product - less chitin from the skin of the older larvae
3. Same price all year round
4. Same diet formulation for the insect all year round as well and thus very stable insectmeal composition
5. Entobel is probably one of the most competitive start up in the field when it comes to production costs - noted the "probably" as official data are scarce

To sum up : EU compliant, Potential higher digestibility, stable in price and quality, potential lower production costs

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Gaetan

Hi Gaetan,
Thank you for the submission of your idea! If you were to scale up production in order to meet a higher demand, how do you ensure proper composition of your final product. I would expect you are seeing some variation in the final product composition due to what is fed to the larvae. Protein and fat content differs depending on what they eat and these effects are not always linear. How do you ensure they receive proper feed?

Hi Gavin,

As mentioned above, Entobel has formulated a stable diet - large volume available - which is fed all year round to the larvae. Process is stable as well. Our variation range is very narrow on macro and micronutrients in the final product.

Hope this help,

Thank you

Hi Gaetan, it is very good to hear you use a formulated stable diet, to reduce nutrient variations in the final product. Also really good to hear that the process is stable.

However do you have actual prove that there is low variety between two batches produced in terms of nutrient analysis, or (even better) in-vivo trials? I realize it takes a lot of effort to answer this question. But from experience we know that two batches of insect protein, produced by the same supplier with a with the same stable diet and stable process still can vary a lot in performance. If my question cannot be answered yet, it might be a key question for the validation trial...

Cheers,

Chris

Dear Chris,

Thank you for the comment.

Macro and micronutrients analysis of several batches in the last years show very little variations.

When it comes to performance, we did several trials - with different batches - with great results but never repeated the exact same trials with different batches. I don't believe variations would be high here if used in same conditions.

Happy to understand which factor you suspect may influence the performance stability of different insectmeal batches having the same lab analysis.

Thank you,

Gaetan

Hi Gaetan,

another question I have is: What kind of ingredients do you use in your formulated feed for your insects? I asked this with respect to sustainability issues; could the ingredients used in formulated insect diets also be used directly as ingredient for Aquafeeds?

Dear Chris,

I can't share our diet here but to answer your second question the ingredients we use are not competing with aquafeed ingredients. The reason is mostly economic. Inputs account for an important part of Entobel variable costs and we could not be competitive if using ingredients used in aquafeed.

Many thanks,

Gaetan

Hi Gaeten,

Globally, there are number of insect producing companies aiming to mass produce BSF larvae using automated process. Have Entobel secured IP on your insect reproduction and rearing process?
Is use of insect meal in aqua- and animal-feed approved in Vietnam?

Thanks,
Saravanan
